A National Park Established on the Former Site of the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Expo to commemorate the Event

This national park was established in August 1976 on the former site of the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Expo to commemorate the event. Today, the park plays a central role as a tourist center in Northern Okinawa Main Island, where various events are held. The park has a wide range of facilities, including the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, where several whale sharks are kept, the Tropical Dream Center, the Oceanic Culture Museum, and the Okichan Theater, where dolphin shows are held. You can also go around the park using electric trollies.

A Place Where You Can See Many “World’s Firsts” and “World’s Bests”

This is one of the world’s largest aquariums where you can experience the ocean of Okinawa, from the shallow waters of the coral reef to the deep sea, under the theme of “Encounter with Okinawa’s Ocean.” The aquarium starts with a touch pool that recreates the shallow waters of a coral reef, onto the aquarium filled with coral and tropical fish that is lit up by natural light, the “Kuroshio Sea” where whale sharks and manta rays swim in schools, and the mysterious deep sea, where you can observe Okinawa’s Ocean as if you were diving. You can also see a number of “world’s firsts” and “world’s bests” such as the world’s first large-scale breeding of live coral in a tank using sunlight and natural seawater, and the world’s first multiple breeding of whale sharks and manta rays seen through the world’s largest acrylic panels.

The Soothing Green Fukugi Tree-lined Street is an Ancient Scene that still retains the appearance of an Old Okinawan Village.

The Bise district near the Ocean Expo Park is a village divided into sections like a grid, and most of the 250 houses are surrounded by a thick premises forest of fukugi trees. This kind of scenery seen throughout the village is unique to Okinawa, where typhoons are common. Fukugi trees have been used as windbreaks in Okinawa since ancient times, and many were planted around the houses in the villages near the sea. Of the thousands of fukugi trees in Bise, the oldest is estimated to be 300 years old.
