The Suimuikan Rest Center, where the general parking is located at, is also a rest center where the park information desk, a restaurant and a store is located which is used by many visitors as a rest stop for sightseeing.
The date of its founding is unknown, but it is recorded that it was established as a royal fortress after the unification of the Sanzan (Three Principalities) by the First Sho Dynasty. It was expanded and improved by King Sho Shin of the Second Sho Dynasty. There were two gates outside the castle, including the Shureimon Gate, and castle gates such as the Kankaimon Gate, the Zuisenmon Gate, and the Hakuginmon Gate were installed on the walls made of hewn Ryukyu limestone. The Seiden Main Hall called the Momourasoe-udun is located within the walls, with the Nanden South Hall and Hokuden North Hall built facing each other to the forward left and right of the Seiden Main Hall. It was burned down during the Battle of Okinawa, but was partially restored and opened as “Shurijo Castle Park” in 1992.

Sonohyan-Utaki Ishimon Stone Gate was a place of worship for the Ryukyu King during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, and refers to the stone gate on the left side of the road behind the Shureimon Gate and the area called Hantan-yama. Whenever the king left the castle, prayers for safety on his round trip were offered at this gate. It was also the first place of worship to be visited during the “Agari Uma-i,” a pilgrimage to places of worship in the east for royal events, and the “Oara-ori,” a ritual for the inauguration of the new Kikoe Okimi (Supreme Priestess of Ryukyu Kingdom). Although a gate with a flat chinese style gable wholly of stone except for its doors, roof plaques of carved stone are attached to both gable decorations as an expression of wooden architecture.
